Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok - Overview

Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has been an inspiration to a host of legendary writers from Somerset Maugham to Graham Greene. Voted the world’s best hotel by readers of influential magazines, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has an international reputation for splendid service and facilities. The hotel celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2006, and during that year renovated The China House restaurant and added an Ayurvedic component to its award-winning spa. This major renovation included the restoration of the legendary Authors’ Lounge, Authors’ Suites, Regency Rooms and Garden Wing rooms.

Built in 1876, the hotel has long been famous for its service, style and grace. With 393 luxuriously appointed rooms and suites, the hotel also has ten restaurants and outlets Le Normandie, The China House, Lord Jim's, the Sala Rim Naam and Terrace Rim Naam serving traditional Thai cuisine, and Ciao, an outdoor Italian bistro. The Bamboo Bar, The Verandah coffee shop, Riverside Terrace and Authors' Lounge, complete the picture.

Other facilities include the internationally renowned Oriental Spa, which opened in 1993 and cemented its reputation as being the first spa to open within a hotel atmosphere in Bangkok. The Oriental Spa is a temple of well-being featuring the latest spa techniques in a traditional Thai setting, and has garnered numerous awards from the most esteemed travel and beauty publications worldwide. In addition, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok also has a business centre, two outdoor swimming pools, squash and tennis courts, shopping arcades, a day care centre, a beauty parlor and barber shop, a fully equipped sports centre, function rooms and conference facilities and The Thai Cooking & Cultural School.

The Group has 44.9% percent ownership of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.

Mr Kurt Wachtveitl has been general manager since 1967 and in 1988, was awarded the Order of the White Elephant, Fourth Class, by The Royal Palace for his contribution to tourism in Thailand. In 2006, he received the prestigious Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific Lifetime Achievement Award.
