History of Mandarin Oriental, Geneva

For two generations Mandarin Oriental, Geneva has offered its’ distinctive, stylish welcome to celebrities, diplomats and captains of industry.  An imposing sight where it rises over the swift-flowing Rhône, the hotel stands at the heart of Geneva and its cultural, shopping and banking districts.  The historic Old Town and its many theatres are all a short stroll away.

Mandarin Oriental, Geneva opened its doors in 1950 and it was the very first hotel built in Europe after World War II symbolising the continent's bold stride into the post-war world.  From the very beginning, it was considered the most luxurious hotel in the city and was unique in having en-suite bathrooms in every room. The hotel's opening coincided with the arrival of the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva and it soon became clear that the hotel would set the trend for luxury and service in the city.  To this day, it continues to exude all the refinement and elegance of a world-class luxury hotel, as well as being the embodiment of the highest ideals of Swiss hospitality.

Guests have spanned from royalty to musicians to politicians: The King of Sweden, the Maharaja of Jaipur, Prince Albert of Belgium to name but a few royal guests.  Talented musicians include the jazz legend Oscar Peterson, Dizzie Gillesppie and the incredible Paul Tortelier.  It has also always been a favourite among executives and politicians and in 1955 three floors of the hotel housed the United States delegation who was over for the Big Four Conference.  President Carter and President Eisenhower have also resided at the hotel.

To maintain this level of service and quality and earn the top rating of five star hotels in the country, Mandarin Oriental, Geneva has continued upgrading and renovating over the 60 years since its opening.

In 1989, the Rafael Hotels Ltd. bought the hotel from its original owners, the Lendi Group and undertook major renovations in the comparatively short period of their ownership. Some CHF 45 million was spent, setting the property apart from its competitors both in service and style.

The renovations introduced modern facilities, but did so with great sensitivity. The distinctive feel of the 1950s was left undisturbed. Interior designers Chhada, Siembieda & Partners worked skilfully within the framework of the sleek, early modernist Art Deco style. The work was completed in 1999 under the supervision of the Swiss Architect Jean-Louis Christen.

In 2000 Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group purchased the hotel and in July 2008 Mandarin Oriental, Geneva completed another major refurbishment.  New York based internationally acclaimed designer Adam D. Tihany was commissioned to design all of the hotel’s public areas in keeping with the innovative new restaurant and bar concepts.
