THE CONCEPTUAL DESIGNER - ADAM D. TIHANY
Overlooking the Rhône River, just a few steps from the historic Old Town, the chic Mandarin Oriental, Geneva completed a significant refurbishment in July 2008. All public areas of the hotel were redesigned by internationally acclaimed interior designer, Adam D. Tihany, giving the hotel a contemporary, fresh look.
Introducing two unique dining concepts, a contemporary but classic bar and all new public areas, this exciting project sets new precedents in the city for design style and spectacular dining experiences.
Tihany brings a truly international perspective to this exciting hotel project; he was born in Transylvania in 1948, grew up in Israel, and earned his architectural degree from the Politecnico di Milano (School of Architecture & Design) in Italy. He moved to New York City in 1976 to become design director of the firm Unigram, and established his own multidisciplinary studio Tihany Design in 1978.
Recognized for his versatility, Tihany has conceived innovative restaurant concepts in many of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities and exclusive resorts. His more significant projects include the public spaces, MO Bar and Amber restaurant at the stylish Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, the signature “C” restaurant for chef Charlie Trotter at the One&Only Palmilla resort in Cabo San Lucas. The restaurant and bar at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London, Le Cirque in Las Vegas and Mexico City, and Osteria del Circo in New York and Las Vegas are just some of the other projects he has designed.
Tihany’s outstanding contribution to the world of design has been recognized with numerous honours and awards including an Honorary Doctorate from the New York School of Interior Design. He was named Bon Appetit’s Designer of the Year in 2001, and was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1991. He received the Prix Villegiature Best Hotel Interior Design in Europe for his design of the Aleph and Boscolo hotels in Rome. Aleph, soon after its opening in the summer of 2003, received the Best European Hotel Design award during The European Design Hotel Event in London.
Tihany Design dedicates itself to custom tailoring its luxury restaurants and hotels to reflect each client’s singular vision and unique brand of hospitality. With Mandarin Oriental, Geneva the overall design concept is contemporary and fresh, giving strong and memorable design identity to each of the diverse areas while maintaining an effortless elegance and harmony among them, befitting the image of the hotel and the Mandarin Oriental brand.
THE INTERIOR DESIGN
PUBLIC AREAS
The public space area created by Adam Tihany has been crafted to increase the visibility of the bar and the all day dining restaurant – Le Sud, and to energize the public space experience. These two important venues are the true “living rooms” of the hotel contributing energy and excitement to the overall hotel experience.
Each room blends together to create a tranquil flow for dining and lounging. The immaculate attention to detail extends throughout the design of each of the spaces. The lobby is a sophisticated entrance that is highlighted with a mirror polish stainless steel feature on the ceiling that plays with reflections to create a grandiose effect.
An inviting reception leads on one end to the stylish MO Bar and lounge area on the other to Le Sud. Tihany uses cherry wood “fin” planks connected with a glass membrane lit from below, and materials such as leather, silk and warm wood to infuse energy and style to the dining experience.
In the specialty restaurant – Rasoi by Vineet, Tihany has used rich woods and stone surfaces with a colour scheme of vibrant reds and purples.
