In 2006, The House of Krug joined forces with the legendary Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong to create one of the world’s most elite intimate restaurants: The Krug Room.
Krug is the champagne of individuals, of those who dare to be different, and The Krug Room is a similarly bold and unique dining event. The Krug Room was created so that guests can discover Executive Chef Uwe Opocensky’s brilliantly creative menus, partnered with the world’s most prestigious champagne, in a sophisticated, intimate dining space. The Krug Room offers excitement and intrigue throughout and is one of only four Krug Rooms in the world.
Diners can expect the unexpected and watch the menus unfold as such tantalising dishes as “Story Book” and “Snowman” arrive in front of them to amaze and stimulate all the senses. The vibrancy of a full working kitchen is something that few are able to experience, yet, in The Krug Room, diners become central to and part of the unfolding drama as they enjoy a front row seat for the creation and preparation of their meal.
An actor cannot perform without an audience and, likewise, a chef needs participants to inspire him or her. Chef Uwe is driven by a passion for creativity while remaining sympathetic to the ingredients and their flavours.
Inspired by his experience of working for some of the world’s greatest chefs – Alain Ducasse, Anton Mosimann and, most notably, Ferran Adrià – Chef Uwe delivers the unexpected with a classical underpinning. He describes his cuisine as “progressive gastronomy”, which reveals the influence of his training at El Bulli in Spain, where he learned the basics of molecular gastronomy from the acknowledged master of the genre. He takes these fundamentals and creates dishes that are intelligent and thought-provoking, evincing an almost whimsical approach to cooking.
There is no menu in The Krug Room; instead, Chef Uwe creates each evening’s dinner according to his inspiration, with the meal accompanied by the diners’ choice from the largest collection of Krug champagnes outside of France. Menus can vary from 10 to 14 courses and various packages are priced as follows:
• Krug Grande Cuvée Package, including two glasses of Krug Grand Cuvée – HKD2,288
• Krug Vintage 1998 Package, including two glasses of Krug Grand Cuvée and a glass of Krug Vintage 1998 – HKD2,488
• Krug Rose Package, including two glasses of Krug Grand Cuvée and a glass of Krug Rosé – HKD2,888
• Krug Experience Package, including two glasses of Krug Grand Cuvée, a glass of Krug Vintage 1998 and a glass of Krug Rosé – HKD3,188
Prices exclude 10% service charge per person.
The Krug Room is open for dinner every Monday to Saturday, except public holidays. For reservations, please contact The Krug Room directly by calling +852 2825 4014 or emailing mohkg-krugroom@mohg.com.
About the Krug Room’s Design
Located in the main kitchen of Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, The Krug Room seductively reveals the world of Krug champagne and has been specially styled by eminent Hong Kong designers Marc and Chantal to create a space that is both elegant and surprising, and that recalls elements of the Krug cellars in Reims, France. Guests of The Krug Room walk across floors made from the same oak as the traditional barrels in which Krug, unique among champagnes, is still fermented. Menus and messages from the kitchen are hand-written on slate walls in chalk similar to that of the chalk deposits from which the Krug cellars in Reims are carved, while the custom-designed chairs have been fashioned to resemble the shadows cast by a full wine glass.
About The House of Krug
Since 1843, six generations of the Krug family have cultivated the markedly individual character of their exceptional champagne, showing that same single-mindedness and sense of purpose with which the founder, Johann-Joseph Krug, set out alone in pursuit of his objective of creating a champagne with a taste all its own. Krug is an encounter, an experience, a revelation – embodied by a range of five extraordinary champagnes: Krug Grande Cuvée, Krug Rosé, Krug Vintage, Krug Collection and Krug Clos du Mesnil.
