Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur Leading City Hotel Sets Quality Mark & Standards

KUALA LUMPUR, August 2008 - Despite strong competition in a thriving global hotel industry, Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur continues to set the international standard in quality matters as well as in environmental, safety and health concerns.  Indeed, the hotel is the first and only one in Malaysia to achieve a total of six certifications for the categories.

Well located next to the Petronas Twin Towers, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Suria KLCC shopping centre as well as major entertainment outlets in the city, Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur now has under its belt four International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and two Malaysian Standards (MS) certifications. The recognition owes to stringent policies and procedures subject to close monitoring and thorough documentation across all departments.  Furthermore, separate committees comprising all hotel employees meet regularly to voice issues and seek ways to solve problems and enhance service.

The efforts are all part of Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur’s recent campaign promising “Moments of Delight”, and these practices ensure superior service throughout a guest’s stay while at once supporting the hotel’s mission to completely delight and satisfy.

“We work together as a team with passion and commitment regardless which department we’re with,” said Mr Jonas A Schuermann, General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur.  “And we continually improve the quality of our services and facilities while also ensuring the health and safety of our guests and the protection of the environment.”

The hotel’s most recent certifications – ISO 22000 and MS 1480 for Food Safety Management Systems – were awarded in March 2008.  This standard integrates the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems developed by Codex Alimentarius Commission.  Certification requires that all hazards that may be reasonably expected to occur in the food chain are identified, assessed and controlled as a preventative measure.  These awards are added to achievements in Quality Management, Environment Management and Occupational Health and Safety attained by the hotel.

Such accomplishments leave no doubt why Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur remains a preferred employer and, and of course, the preferred venue for corporate and leisure guests in both local and international markets.  The hotel’s commitment to maintaining safe, secure and environmentally viable operations complements and enhances an experience that discerning travellers and customers have come to appreciate.

“With globalisation and the higher expectation of world-class quality services and facilities, as well as a heightened awareness of environmental, health and safety matters, both corporate and individual customers are increasingly particular regarding their choice of hotel,” said Mr Schuermann.  “It has become imperative for many that international as well as local certifications are in place, and this means all policies and procedures must be adhered to.  At Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur we mean business when it comes to delivering quality to each and every guest.”

Mr Jonas A Schuermann has more than 20 years of hotel management experience in his home country of Switzerland and in Asia.  He has been the General Manager of Mandarin, Kuala Lumpur for the past three years and is a veteran with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, having held previous positions at Mandarin Oriental, Macau and at the renowned The Oriental, Bangkok.
