Diners at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur will no doubt be enticed by the diverse selection of cuisine available in each of the hotel’s three signature dining outlets. Located within the city centre and next to the magnificent 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers - the hotel has added an innovative twist to its restaurants, providing a cuisine which moves away from traditional hotel fare to one that has both international and local appeal.
A melange of diverse, exotic flavours is complemented by each restaurant’s unique decor. The design has ensured that maximum visibility has been achieved from inside and outside the hotel, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
Biba’s Café, located on the lobby level, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner featuring freshly prepared international favourites and popular local dishes such as Hainanese Chicken Rice, Asam Laksa and Mamak Mee. The mood is of a contemporary bistro café, promoting an informal yet cosy ambience with a strong use of natural light. Separate dining levels divide the spacious restaurant into intimate areas. The restaurant’s stylish design features interactive buffet counters as well as a cappuccino/espresso bar.
The interior has earthy undertones and uses natural fibres, textures and soft lighting to create an aesthetic balance between the panoramic exterior views of KLCC park. The restaurant offers buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as an A la carte menu available from 6am to 12am. A selection of supper selections awaits guests who wish to dine at the café after 12am.
Pacifica Grill and Bar uses an eclectic design mix in both menus and decor. Introducing a contemporary yet intimate dining experience, the restaurant uniquely boasts a trendy show kitchen that provides diners with the opportunity to witness the culinary skills of the chefs while the multi-level dining areas with curtained private alcoves feature a sophisticated dining ambience adorned by mosaic tiles, bright murals, colourful fabric lamps and unusual local artefacts.
Highlighting innovative Contemporary European cuisine with distinctive Asian influence, Pacifica’s exotic cuisine features signature favourite dishes such as starter selections including Macadamia nut crusted rillettes of duck leg and foie gras with candied beetroot, Panfried duck liver escalope with sweet pandan and palm sauce, whilst enticing mains offer Lemon and roasted garlic crusted black cod with baby kailan and capsicum brandade, Poached mahi mahi with galangal relish and soy braised leeks and wattleseed cream, Spice poached fillet of veal with oxtail wantons accompanied with baby bak choy, sago and ginger roesti. Pacifica also boasts a selection of delectable desserts such as Olive and vanilla marinated strawberries with Wasabi ice cream and anise crisp and Emas banana and bitter chocolate trifle coffee and croquant sherbet amongst others.
Other features of the restaurant include a bar, a cigar divan and two private dining rooms, seating eight and fourteen respectively. Located on the lobby level of the hotel, Pacifica Grill is open for lunch from 12pm to 2:30pm, and for dinner from 7pm to 11pm from Monday to Saturday. Pacifica Bar is open from 5pm till 1am from Monday to Saturday and highlights an extensive choice of wines and champagnes by the glass or bottle. Pacifica Grill & Bar are closed on Sunday and public holidays.
On the first floor of the hotel is the Cantonese restaurant Lai Po Heen, indicative of the wealthy homes of respected tycoons in turn-of-the-century Malaya. The restaurant’s architecture is reminiscent of Shanghai’s hey day, furnished with antique furniture from Malacca.
Lai Po Heen serves traditional Cantonese cuisine, specialising in classic Cantonese delicacies and a wide array of dim sum. The highlight of the restaurant is an open Chinese kitchen where flaming woks and a hierarchy of Chinese chefs set the scene. Lai Po Heen is open daily for lunch from12:00pm to 2:30pm, while dinner is served from 7pm to 10:30pm. On Sunday and public holidays, the restaurant is open for lunch from 11am and 3pm.
For a modern take on intricate traditional Japanese fare, the stylish Wasabi Bistro features a nouvelle Californian-Japanese inspired cuisine with an emphasis on fresh seafood in a trendy bistro setting. Located on the lower lobby level, this quaint, intimate hideaway imbibes a sense of calm with its light, warm hued walls softly illuminated by ambient lighting and decorated with exquisite Japanese art and artefacts.
Popular unique selections featured at Wasabi Bistro include Rainbow Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Spicy Calamari Salad and Hawaiian Poke Sampler. Wasabi Bistro is open daily for lunch from 12pm to 2:30pm and for dinner at 6pm to 10:30pm.
