The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, in collaboration with Tao Painting Gallery, is delighted to present a series of exclusive art postcards showcasing the unique collection of Chinese ink paintings by J.D. Chou, an internationally acclaimed artist who originated Tao painting in the 1970s.
Unlike other forms of painting where practice is the key, Tao painting’s movement requires a knowledge of the philosophy of Taoism, which embodies Yin and Yang, nature and simplicity. Chou is famed for his “divine stroke”, a combination of artistry and philosophical motivation expressed in bold, sophisticated, simplified linear strokes using “chi” (energy), a traditional technique in Chinese ink painting. Inspired by the beauty of life, Chou’s creations evoke a spirit that reveals his true understanding of such subjects as the birds, animals and trees found in nature. Described as moving like a gymnast, Chou’s widely appreciated creation “One Stroke Rooster” was done in a single long stroke, revealing the amazing execution of “chi” that enabled him to paint a continuous long line swiftly and precisely with the limited amount of ink held in the tip of a brush.
The art postcards are presented in a set of four and are only available for guests of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental. They feature some of Chou’s most outstanding works, including “Tao Bird”, “Tao Horse”, “One Stroke Crane” and “Tao Mountain”. The set of complimentary postcards are available to all in-room guests at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong.
Born in China, Chou studied Western oil painting in Paris where his passion for painting was kindled. On discovering that his true love was Oriental art and ink painting, he went to Tokyo to learn Zen painting and was inspired to found Tao painting in 1972. Chou is among the 100 Chinese artists recognised by the Cultural Department of China and a number of his masterpieces are in the permanent collections of museums throughout China, including “One Stroke Crane”, which is in the Beijing Art Museum.
Anthony Costa, General Manager of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong comments “Mr. Chou’s philosophy of balance and harmony is a great reflection of the oriental heritage and personalised service that has made Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group renowned worldwide. We are proud and honoured to have this opportunity to work with such a prominent Chinese artist.”
J.D. Chou himself adds, "I am delighted by this partnership. We both share oriental values and we both care about aesthetics and harmony. Tao is about nature and harmony. I hope that the images of my paintings will bring relaxation through Tao to the guests of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental."
