Sustainable Tourism and Green Initiatives at Mandarin Oriental, Miami

Mandarin Oriental, Miami strives to be conscious of its impact on the environment and to make a difference where it can, including various Green Efforts that are practiced throughout the hotel.

Partnership With Clean The World

In the U.S. alone, 2.6 million soap bars are discarded every day by the 4.6 million hotel rooms in the country. Mandarin Oriental hotels in North America including our Miami property have partnered with Clean the World to donate soaps and shampoo that would have been sent to landfill. Clean the World is a program that recycles donated soap from hotels and distributes it, along with education materials, to impoverished countries worldwide and homeless shelters in the North America. The soap is reprocessed to ensure they are sanitary for reuse. To date, Mandarin Oriental has diverted nearly three tons of soap from disposal to donate to Clean the World, resulting in over 26,000 bars of soap delivered to children in need.

Volunteer Opportunities At Everglades National Park

Mandarin Oriental, Miami is working closely with nearby Everglades National Park to learn about the challenges they face and to develop opportunities for the hotel to help through voluntourism programs. These interesting and fulfilling day trips include tree planting, recycling projects and weeding out exotic plants. While The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Miami has developed an innovative treatment to support the park. The Herbal Thai Compress Ritual was designed for soothing muscles with compresses made of naturally therapeutic ingredients. At the end of the treatment, guests will be asked to select which type of tree they would like to be planted to help enrich Everglades National Park, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States boasting rare and endangered species.

Green Efforts

As a member of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Florida Green Lodging Program, Mandarin Oriental, Miami is committed to adopting “green” practices that reduce waste and conserve natural resources. To become a designated member of the Florida Green Lodging Program, hotels must implement a variety of green practices. Here is what we are doing at the hotel.

  • Implementation and auditing of low flow systems for faucets, showers and toilets in guest rooms and public restrooms
  • Back of the house recycling programs address white paper products, newspapers, magazines, plastic and aluminum
  • Recycling of fluorescent light bulbs, pallets, ink and toner cartridges, TVs, computers and monitors
  • Office paper is 30% post-consumer recycled content and ordered only once monthly
  • Instituted a bulk purchasing program from office supply vendors
  • All exterior lighting and lighting in the lobby has been refitted with low energy florescent lighting and room number display lights in guestroom corridors have been changed with LED technology
  • Use of timer lighting systems where appropriate indoors and outdoors
  • Light Patrol members conduct a daily walk thru in the public areas, meeting rooms and vacant rooms
  • Use of programmable thermostats to monitor the temperature systems in our meeting rooms and guest rooms while they are not in use
  • Use of computerized Energy Management system
  • Use of environmentally friendly cleaning products

In addition we have a Green Team at Mandarin Oriental, Miami. Representatives from all departments of the hotel make up the Green Team, an energy conservation team that meets once a month to review our current programs and processes as well as develop new green ideas that can be implemented.

Room Conservation

If any of our guests would like to join in our Green Efforts to protect the environment we’ve tried to make it easy, with small choices, which are all detailed here under room conservation.

Bed Linens - Upon check-in, your room has been thoroughly cleaned and supplied with fresh linens. If any day you prefer not to have your bed linens changed, please make a request to our Housekeeping department.

Towels - If you would like to re-use your towels please leave them on the towel rack. Otherwise we will replace them daily.

Recycling Program - Through our back of the house program, we recycle white paper products, newspapers, magazines, plastic and aluminum on a daily basis. If you wish to participate simply place your newspapers, magazines and any other recycling products adjacent to the trash bin in your guest room. Our housekeeping staff will collect your items and recycle them daily.

Green Palm Award

Mandarin Oriental, Miami is a recipient of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Florida Green Lodging Program designation. To become a designated member of the Florida Green Lodging Program, hotels must implement a variety of green practices. These practices include, but are not limited to, water conservation measures through low flow plumbing fixtures and a linen reuse program, and energy efficiency achieved by installing ENERGY STAR® appliances and programmable thermostats. The waste reduction criteria are met by providing the opportunity to recycle, purchasing items in bulk, purchasing recycled materials and by recycling ink and toner cartridges. All designated properties must also use green cleaners and high efficiency air filters, and clean air handler units frequently.
