A Sense of Space, A Sense of Place
The first impression upon arriving at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo is one that remains with you for the rest of your stay. Having been sped up 38 floors by private elevator, you step out into a stunningly chic, glass-enclosed lobby where all of Tokyo seems spread before you. Dramatic views of the metropolis are revealed time and again throughout the hotel, whether from its luxuriously appointed rooms and suites, spectacular restaurants and bar, or its sybaritic spa, a space that has to be seen to be believed.
Far below at street level, the prestigious Nihonbashi address is a place where centuries-old shops specialising in upscale Japanese handicrafts tempt with everything from lacquerware and washi papers to the finest kimono, and fans fashioned from bamboo and silk. The hotel’s trademark fan was in fact created by nearby Ibasen, a celebrated shop that’s been in business since 1590. Nihonbashi is the cultural and historical heart of the city and has always signified one’s arrival in the capital: it’s the location from which all road distances between Tokyo and other points in Japan are measured. The historic edifices here are home to major financial, insurance and securities firms, while the contemporary haute couture of the world-renowned Ginza is just blocks away.
The hotel’s proximity to several key business districts as well as the bay area makes for truly dynamic views of the metropolis from the 178 guest rooms and suites situated on the 30th to 36th floors of a Cesar Pelli-designed tower. Corner rooms and suites afford views even while soaking in the bath. The guest rooms are among the largest in Tokyo at 50 square maters and up.
Designed with the highest standards of comfort, luxury and technology, the rooms celebrate the elegance of the Orient and the Japanese appreciation of all things natural. Woods and water, central to Japanese spiritualism since ancient times, are the inspiration behind exquisite original fabrics conceived by textile designer Reiko Sudo. Sculptural textures, transparent filigrees and hand-finished elements make each fabric a real piece of art; it’s no surprise that Ms. Sudo’s works are represented in the permanent collections of New York’s MOMA and The Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The award-winning body of works that appoints each guest room in blinds, partitions, bedcovers, and upholstery draws generously from Japan’s rich heritage of weaving and dyeing, creating an unmistakable sense of place.

Just five minutes from the second largest stock exchange in the world, Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo is a commanding place from which to conduct business. Guest rooms are equipped with the latest communications technologies and their thoughtfully planned, spacious layout conveniently accommodates mini presentations. For entertaining, tables at the internationally hip and eclectic range of restaurants suit any mood or occasion, and are among the most sought-after in the city. Elegant and iconic, Signature serves creative modern French cuisine, while Sense beckons with contemporary Cantonese fare. At the cutting-edge Tapas Molecular Bar, both flavours and preconceptions are creatively disassembled in a degustation menu of more than 20 artfully presented dishes. An all-day restaurant, ultra-stylish bar, refined lounge, and an atrium buffet restaurant serving traditional Italian fare round out the wealth of choices.
For larger gatherings and formal events, the hotel offers both state-of-the-art venues in a sleek futuristic tower as well as elegant meeting and function rooms in an adjoining national landmark erected in 1929. Unusual? Indeed, the combination is made possible by an architecturally unprecedented and award-winning union of the two buildings. Exacting service by attentive staff ensure that gatherings in any of these unique spaces will be as memorable as the surroundings themselves.
