Time to indulge

Madison Avenue has some of the best shopping in New York City. There you‘ll find a full line-up of high-end boutiques stretching from 86th Street down to 57th Street. Head south for Tiffany & Co, Cartier, Bergdorf Goodman, Ferragamo, Versace, Gucci, Prada, Lacoste, Brooks Brothers, Façonnable and Saks; located across the street from St Patrick‘s Cathedral along with a host of other stores lining both sides of Fifth Avenue down to 34th Street. Go further downtown and before you reach the fashionable shop-lined streets of SoHo you can discover Chelsea, a bustling artists‘ neighbourhood that is home to the hippest galleries in town, a lively flea market and antiques mall; be willing to sift and haggle over price.

Time to think Time to think
Manhattan is famous for it‘s magnificent museums, many only a short walk from the hotel. Visit the all-new Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. But for something really different, try the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. It‘s in the heart of New York‘s renowned immigrant neighbourhood; restored apartments in the centrepiece building at 97 Orchard Street interpret the experiences of thousands of newly arrived families.

Dont leave without Dont leave without
New Yorkers take eating and drinking very seriously indeed, so visits to the city‘s current favourites are a must. Two of the hottest hotspots can be found in Mandarin Oriental, New York; one is the Lobby Bar with its unparalleled views of Central Park; the other is the more intimate MObar with its stunning, ultra-contemporary décor. To pick up on media gossip, stop off at Michael‘s, in midtown, where magazine editors, agents, publishers and television executives lunch, mingle and deal. A more bohemian bar scene can be found in the red-hot Meatpacking District, where bistros like Pastis, Meet and 5 Ninth serve as hangouts for artists, models and actors. One of the newest places-to-be-seen in town is The Modern, the restaurant at the renovated Museum of Modern Art. Overlooking the museum‘s famous sculpture garden through a glass wall, the restaurant has a view like no other. Speaking of views, Asiate at Mandarin Oriental, New York offers spectacular vistas of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline, along with unique French and Japanese cuisine. If it‘s cheese you like, French brasserie Artisanal has an unmatched selection. The Union Square Café remains as great as it ever was, and, of course, New York has the best steak houses north of Argentina. At the top of the list are Sparks, Smith & Wollensky, The Post House, Ben Benson‘s and Ruth‘s Chris.

For an inside look at American military history, visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, which consists of the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier and the USS Growler submarine. Both are docked at Pier 86 on the Hudson River. Visitors can also see the city from the water on narrated cruises around Manhattan with Circle Line Tours. Television buffs will enjoy the midtown Museum of Television and Radio where fans can choose from a collection of 50,000 television and radio shows and watch them at video consoles available onsite.

Time for adventure Time for adventure
Anyone interested in an important era of 20th-century American history can travel about 145km north of New York City to Hyde Park, in Dutchess County, and visit the lifelong home of President Franklin D Roosevelt. A national historic site, the estate also includes the Presidential Library and Museum where among the artefacts is the original manuscript of his famous inaugural speech: ‘The only thing we have to fear is fear itself‘. Any trip to Hyde Park should also involve a stop at the Culinary Institute of America, the nation‘s premier training ground for chefs for more than 50 years. Five restaurants offer a wide range of cuisines prepared by the school‘s exceptionally well-trained students. Make weekend reservations as far in advance as possible.
