September! It’s back to school for most of us, and the holiday blues for some; although, I hasten to add, not for the readers of Destination MO: if holidays are still going on around the world, you can expect to hear about them here.
Macau will be ablaze from 14 September to 1 October, when the 25th anniversary of its annual International Fireworks Display Contest takes place. Competing nations – including teams from Australia, Italy and Korea – will put their pyrotechnic skills to the test, resulting in breathtaking displays for a delighted citywide audience. And this month, we’re delighted to let you know that those in Hong Kong and the rest of China will be enjoying the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival, from 19 to 21 September. Also known as the Moon Festival, this annual holiday allows families to get together to celebrate the moon at its fullest and share the traditional and delicious moon cakes – the rounded shape representing both the moon and the union of family – while reminiscing about family moments and remembering distant relatives.
If you are in Tokyo, head straight to Ryogoku Kokugikan, the national sumo stadium, for autumn’s Grand Sumo Tournament, which runs from 15 to 29 September. Go early, between 7am and 11am, to catch glimpses of the wrestlers during their training sessions, or see them off-duty and surprisingly elegant in their kimonos and clogs. Or for some action of a different sort this month, and a magnate for petrolheads, the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it F1 Singapore Grand Prix is scheduled from 20 to 22 September.
Fashionistas will be strapping on their best heels and tottering off to New York for the start of the Spring/Summer 2013 shows, on 5 September at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, followed by the London collections beginning on the 13th. Fast becoming a force to be reckoned with, Boston Fashion Week will also be cutting a dash, showcasing its local design talent between 27 September and 5 October.
Justin Timberlake, Elton John and Katy Perry are just some of the hitmakers appearing at Las Vegas’s iHeartRadio Festival, held at the MGM Grand the weekend of 20 and 21 September. Meanwhile, yachties should set sail to San Francisco and its Bay for the America’s Cup Finals, from 7 to 21 September. Racing is inshore and close to the public, so don’t forget your waterproofs!
Over in Europe, Prague will be hosting the soundtrack to the new season with its Strings of Autumn International Music Festival, from 23 September. And Munich will be having a little oom-pah-pah of its own at the world-renowned beer festival that is the Oktoberfest, which extends across the Bavarian city from 21 September to 6 October.
Get the lowdown from our Monthly Insiders Anita Duffin in Macau and Courtney Hollands in Boston telling you what to do and see in these exciting places this October.
