The Mandarin turns 60

Destinations

As Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong celebrates its birthday, we look back over six momentous decades.

It’s been an astonishing 60 years, both for Hong Kong and our hotel, with landmark events unfolding both within and beyond its walls. Set in a changing city and backdropped by an ever-shifting skyline, Mandarin Oriental’s first-ever hotel has remained a constant for visitors and locals. Even so, some things haven’t changed over the decades – not least the legendary service that made its name.

This year, we’re celebrating the place where it all began. There are some very special menus and guest chefs at Man Wah and Mandarin Grill + Bar, while October brings a glittering anniversary gala. The East Lobby, meanwhile, is home to a year-long exhibition full of remarkable photos from the archives.

Here, we look back at the greatest hits from the hotel’s storied history – from its bold debut as The Mandarin to its role during the 1997 handover, and its iconic status in modern-day Hong Kong.
