Pierre Barthes - General Manager, Mandarin Oriental, Beijing
Upon graduating from France’s Hotel Management School of Nice, Pierre left for the United States, where he worked extensively in restaurants prior to his decision to pursue a career in the hotel industry. His career led him to many exotic destinations around the globe including Hawaii, Rancho Mirage and Kuala Lumpur.
With more than 24 years experience in the hospitality industry, Pierre began his career as Assistant Restaurant Manager at The Westin Galleria in Dallas, Texas. Just prior to joining Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in August 1998, Pierre served as Resident Manager of The Park Lane, Jakarta and prior to that as Food & Beverage Director at the Regent Kuala Lumpur - a Four Seasons property.
Since joining our Group in 1998, Pierre has been the Food & Beverage Director at the Kahala, the Rooms Director at the San Francisco property and later the Resident Manager at both Mandarin Oriental San Francisco and New York. Pierre supported the successful pre and post opening efforts at Mandarin Oriental, New York – his 7th hotel opening – which was a brand defining moment for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in its international portfolio.
Pierre was then appointed as General Manager of Mandarin Oriental Macau and did an excellent job in taking the hotel to new heights and successfully managed a number of key projects at this hotel. More recently, Pierre was appointed as General Manager of Mandarin Oriental Beijing, an exciting new project scheduled to open this year.
Cynthia Leong – Director of Human Resources, the Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong
Cynthia, who joined the Mandarin Oriental, Macau in 1983, gained her extensive hotel experience in various hotel departments including Front Office, Banquet Sales, and Public Relations. In 1989, she was promoted to Head of Human Resources and assumed the title of Human Resources Director in 1997. In February 2003, she transferred to the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong as Director of Human Resources before moving to assume her current role as Human Resources Director at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong.
Cynthia successfully implemented a "Flexible Benefits" programme as one of the recruitment and retention strategies to allow colleagues more flexibility in making meaningful benefit selections that meet their individual requirements or personal needs.
Cynthia is currently studying for our in-house MBA programme.
Amy Thompson – Executive Sous Chef, Mandarin Oriental, New York
After spending 2 years as head of her own event planning & design consultancy, Amy began her promising career in luxury hotels in 1998. Quick to exemplify that her talent in the culinary arts is rivaled only by her dedication to her craft, she swiftly made her way up the ranks of the hospitality food & beverage industry-holding positions such as Assistant Chef Garde Manger and Club Chef with another hotel group. She joined Mandarin Oriental, New York in 2003 as part of the pre-opening team as Chef Garde Manager. Having effectively led her team through the opening of one of the city’s most prominent hotels, it was clear that Amy was an ideal candidate for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s Management Development Program. She successfully completed the program in 2005 and was promoted to the Executive Sous Chef in January 2006.
Amy looks forward to a long, flourishing career with the world’s most luxurious hotel group.
Rhonda Thompson - Benefits Manager, Mandarin Oriental Management (USA)
Rhonda was introduced to ‘Luxury’ from 1984-1997 holding various positions for an upscale global greeting card distributor. She joined Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco in 1997 as a Senior Accountant, a role which included processing payroll for Regional Sales Offices colleagues in the US. In September 2000 promoted to Senior Accountant-Corporate Accounting for Mandarin Oriental Management (USA). From 2001 to 2003, Rhonda occupied a dual role of Senior Accountant and HR Administrator. In 2003, she relinquished accounting duties and concentrated on HR, in particular health and welfare benefits. Rhonda was promoted to Benefits Manager, The Americas in June 2005, overseeing the health and retirement benefits for the US properties.
She is currently pursuing the Professional of Human Resources (PHR) certification.
