The centre of Marrakech, the Medina, is surrounded by a 16 kilometre red wall. The most impressive entry to the city is through the ornate 12th century Bab Agnaou gate. You can tour the streets by horse drawn carriages or on foot, stepping through a maze of narrow alleys, past the familiar coloured walls of ochre sandstone and pink powder plaster. The central square, the Jmaa el Fna, is a frenzy of activity with snake charmers, monkeys and hawkers of the bizarre and fabulous. The souks are filled with copper, woodwork, colourful glass lamps, rugs and other exotic crafts. The scent of spice is always in the air.
At night the street stalls, lined with bare light bulbs, sell a myriad of small foods.
