Founded in 1903 by Oskar von Miller, an eminent German engineer, this is the oldest and largest museum dedicated to technology and engineering in the world. It houses a library and archive detailing the history of German engineering from the early 20th century.

Built at enormous expense by Ludwig II – Bavaria’s former King – between 1868 and 1892, it is one of the most renowned castles in the region. Perched amongst the forest and mountain scenery of the Alps, it was the inspiration for Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

An extravagantly decorated castle, also constructed for Ludwig II, the elaborate interior is based on the opulence of the French Baroque architecture and it was used as a retreat by the King. Constructed between 1869 and 1878 on a steep hillside.

Bavaria’s largest freshwater lake covers an area of 80 square km (30 square miles) is often referred to as the ‘Bavarian Sea’ and is notable for two famous islands, Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee. The former is home to an incomplete castle, which was intended to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles.

Most famous as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the city is a cultural haven for music lovers, thanks largely to the Salzburg Festival which was founded in the early part of the 20th century. Characterised by cobbled streets and mountains the city was also the set for the film, The Sound of Music.

The Old Town is home to a number of attractions including the Marienplatz (Town Square), the Viktualienmarkt (Food Market) and the Frauenkirche (Church). The main square in Munich is the centre of the town for inhabitants and visitors alike.

Home to the ruling Wittelsbach dynasty until 1918, the building dates back to 1385. Inside the impressive medieval building is the Cuvilliers Theatre, an intimate rococo opera house as well as exhibitions dedicated to displaying the region’s royal treasury.

These are two of Munich’s most famous art galleries: Alte Pinakothek is home to a collection of art from the 14th - 18th centuries; Neue Pinakothek has displays of European painting from the 19th century, while Pinakothek der Modern is devoted to contemporary art.

It was constructed over many years from 1664 and its Stone Hall is of particular note, as is the famous Schönheitengalerie (Gallery of the Beauties) which contains portraits of 36 local women. Also on the grounds, modern Europe’s first swimming pool.

The stadium was built for the 20th Olympic Games, which took place in Munich in 1972, and is now used for a range of activities including sporting events and concerts. On a clear day The Alps are visible from the 287m high Olympic Tower.

A large urban park covering 3.7 square km – making it one of the largest public parks in the world, it was founded in 1789. Its name refers to the gardening technique of informal planting, which was popular in the United Kingdom in the early 18th century.

This street is home to many of the world’s most exclusive fashion brands, hotels and jewellers. The buildings are historically and architecturally important; a mix of Renaissance and Gothic styles.

One of the most renowned shopping streets in Munich is the Kaufingerstrasse, which leads up from the Marienplatz up to the Karlsplatz/Stachus. This street is home to many local shops, as well as the department stores and is completely pedestrianised.
