Situated in the lush grounds surrounding the Spa. The Temazcal is a therapy unique to the Maya. Guests are ensconced in a space heated with lava rocks, which are doused with herb infused water. The air is filled with an aromatic steam and the body is nourished with fruit essence and mud enriched with minerals, all offering antioxidant and healing properties. The ceremony is guided by a Mayan Shaman, who is present to encourage and support the journey into the ‘inner self’.

This mud-based treatment blends mud, steam and heat for an experience that cleanses, releases toxins and rejuvenates. It begins with an exfoliation using natural herbs. Mud is applied to the body and upon exposure to dry heat, the pores open and toxins are released. Guests then enter the mosaic-tiled treatment room and relax in warm throne-style chairs as hot steam softens the mud aiding absorption of the nutritious, natural minerals.

The treatment begins with a soothing footbath in purifying waters, leaving the feet soft and supple and the mind relaxed. Next two therapists work together in time and movement. The traditional Mayan ritual of Temazcal signifies spiritual and physical healing and rebirth. The Temazcal at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya was designed to blend the ancient Mayan ceremony with the beautiful natural surroundings, offering a deep womb-like experience within the Temazcal and a relaxing and reflective experience of being in nature when outside of the Temazcal. Inspired by the power and strength of the natural elements and Mayan belief in the lunar calendar, this ritual is focused on the balancing of the body’s energies in relation to the internal and external world. The treatment commences with an introspective journey into our Medicinal Garden Mandala and your selection of healing herbs. Upon entrance into your treatment room, your experience begins with a footbath using the fresh herbs, followed by a full body scrub and an Herbal poultice on areas of tension. A healing massage is performed based on the principles of the Tzolkin, the Mayan lunar calendar. A balanced, relaxed, and replenished body will be the result.

One such technique, the Na Lu’um massage, focuses on the abdomen, an area which stores and processes many of our human emotions.
