About Andy Myers, Sommelier

A native of the Washington DC area, Sommelier Andy Myers began his hospitality career working at the snack bar of a local country club. For five years he did everything from dishwasher to banquet server to bartender. As a result, he knew he always wanted to work in a restaurant.

Concurrently, he was also playing the drums in a punk rock band, My Life In Rain, and was offered a recording contract with a tiny label out of New York. Between touring, Andy worked in local restaurants waiting tables and tending bar.

In 1997, My Life In Rain split up, and after a few small restaurant jobs, Andy received an offer from the award-winning Inn At Little Washington. Working as a server and then captain, Andy became interested in their wine program, eventually leading him to work under the property’s sommelier. When the sommelier departed, Andy was named Acting Sommelier and was later appointed Assistant to the Sommelier when a new one was hired. Andy continued his wine studies rigorously.

Upon leaving the Inn at Little Washington in October 2000, Andy returned to Washington, DC to manage Restaurant Nora in Dupont Circle. He spent the next five years managing the front of the house staff and handling the wine department. He successfully continued with his wine studies and completed the second of the Master Sommelier exam in April 2007.

Now, as Sommelier of CityZen restaurant and wine director for Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC, Andy is on his way to becoming  the title of Master Sommelier most recently by passing the third of the Master Sommelier exam in April 2008.
