The Gallery
Mandarin Oriental, Washington, DC features rotating art exhibits to coincide with events in the city. The 1,566-square-foot gallery features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial. There are daily viewing hours from 10am–5:30pm when the room is not scheduled for a private function.
Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC, in association with Galerie Brigitte of Reston, Virginia, presents an exclusive exhibit of modern lacquer, Vietnamese paintings, “Blending Traditions: Contemporary Lacquer by Duong Sen,” featuring Sen’s fascination with traditional Asian subjects. The Gallery, located on the ballroom mezzanine level of Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC, will run the exhibit August 15, 2008 through February 2009.
“Blending Traditions: Contemporary Lacquer by Duong Sen” depicts the lifestyle and culture of Vietnamese women typically dressed in traditional clothing, children, and lotus flowers. Sen uses a rich mix of red, yellow and black colors harmoniously throughout his lacquer paintings, brushing on the abstract. Several of the pieces on display include Childhood Dream, lacquer; Flamenco Guitar, lacquer; and Enchanted Melody, lacquer, and range in price from USD 2,000 to USD 20,000.
Born in Nghe An, Vietnam, Sen graduated from the University of Fine Arts in 1983 and has been as member of the Fine Arts Associations of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh since 1979. Additionally, he has received numerous accolades, including third place in the Vietnam Fine Arts Exhibition, 1998 and second place in 1999. His work is currently on display at fine arts museums in Hanoi and HCM City, as well as in private collections in France, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States.
