The ultimate fitness coach and cheerleader, Mary Jane Kleiman (pictured above, instructing in the fitness studio at Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas) has loyal clients who travel across the world to be taught by her. And with nearly two decades' worth of Pilates, yoga, fitness and gyrotonic instruction under her belt, coupled with a practice that incorporates biomechanics, anatomy and kinesiology, it is little wonder.
What adds to her specialness, however, is her boundless enthusiasm – ‘Each day, every class and each student are a gift to me,' she says – an outlook that is partly the result of a near-fatal cycling accident. Her survival, according to her doctor, was down to her excellent health, flexibility and condition. Here, we find out about her work at Mandarin Oriental.
What is your typical day?
My typical day usually begins between 5am and 6am with an overview of daily appointments and classes. I start with clients who have personal training classes scheduled, transitioning into the complimentary fitness classes offered to the hotel guests.

What classes do you offer?
Classes range from mat- to reformer-based Pilates and various yoga styles. Kinesis wall classes offer guests the ability to spend time on strength training. In the Fitness Center I am able to answer any guest's fitness questions that may arise.
Are your classes inclusive of all levels of fitness?
I welcome all levels of fitness and make adjustments to ensure each person receives the holistic benefits of movement. Each body is on its own unique journey to greater mental, physical and spiritual health. I am here as a tool to help inspire and motivate the change within everyone. I also love the challenge when there are highly skilled guests in the classes, as I am able to draw upon all of my training techniques.

What is the key element of all your classes?
It is about finding the perfect balance between pushing clients to ensure that they receive the results they are seeking while remaining enthusiastic, energetic and positive.
How are they structured?
I keep to the traditional order of sequence, but from the very beginning of the warm up to the cool down I set expectations and follow them through. My goal is to leave guests centred, regardless of the class. I am also very hands-on with adjustments and provide guests with guidance.
What sets your instruction apart from others?
I integrate 18 years of body movement training experience into each session, utilising my ability to recognise individual fitness needs. Each class and experience is different as a result, whether it's gyrotonics, yoga, or personal training.
What is your favourite class at a local Las Vegas studio?
A TRX class at Evolution Yoga in Green Valley.
