A warm welcome at Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta isn’t just reserved for human guests. Our four-legged friends get to enjoy the luxury treatment, too, reveals Carlos Pelaez, Guest Relations Manager

I can hear their little paws lightly pounding the marble floors of our foyer as they enter the hotel. It’s almost as if they know that a big treat is awaiting them. But the guests of Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta love the pet amenity programme, too, from the special check-in process to the healthy snacks and meals we provide for their lovable pets.

Recently, I had the pleasure of welcoming back a guest with a 15lb Yorkie poodle pup named Sam. I knew that they both felt right at home as soon as they walked into our residential-inspired, boutique lobby. As with all of our guests I offer the owner a warm oshibori towel and peach-flavoured tea, while the pup receives filtered water.

The check-in process is my favourite, because guests always anticipate the comfort of our luxurious rooms after their long flights and sometimes exhausting travel schedules. And once I escort them to their elegant and spacious rooms, they are always pleasantly surprised at the wide range of personalised amenities we offer. For those with canine pets there’s a beautiful, themed doggie welcome card addressed to our furry fans, accompanied by doggie bowls and organic dog bones to nibble on. When it nears dinnertime, our in-room ‘MOpup’ dining programme offers a selection of special pet-friendly dishes, such as chicken liver turnover with mixed vegetables or lamb and beef meatloaf.

On warm nights, guests tend to enjoy a nightcap in the nooks of our stunning garden, where there’s a choice of handcrafted cocktails and, for dogs, a non-alcoholic peach ‘MOcktail’ or coconut water-infused ‘Melon Puptail’ – Sam always opts for anything peach flavoured. After a long day, a turndown service back in the guest room includes a doggie dental kit and more refreshing water.

Guests with puppies always tend to be early risers. I greet them as they enter the lobby again the following day, on their way out for a walk in the sunny Buckhead neighbourhood. Before they are out the door I hand over an ‘Explore FANtastic Atlanta’ map, so they can discover the best pet-friendly places in the city including the popular walking trails in nearby Chastain Park.

Sam’s owner has a busy weekend planned and the concierge and I are now tasked with providing recommendations on Atlanta’s top dog sitters, grooming services, pet hot spots and pet retailers. After ensuring Sam has everything he needs for a happy stay, I surprise him with a plush little dog bone that he can play with.

At the end of the weekend I say goodbye to my little furry friend. Before our guest checks out, I make sure Sam has one more surprise to take with him for the long journey home – a small red hoodie designed with the slogan ‘Keep Calm and Carry Treats’.
