Hold onto your hats, people – it’s February! To all you sartorialists out there, this means only one thing: the biannual, month-long quartet of fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris are about to kick off – no doubt with great style and aplomb – on 6 February in NYC. What will Anna Wintour be wearing? Who will Kanye upset this time? Why has somesuch and so been placed in – gasp – the second row? All these questions and more will be answered in person or while watching the live streaming of the shows online during this fashiontastic month.
If you are more into sport than clothes (there must be at least one of you out there), we have a triumvirate of events to get your muscles twitching. Get your running shoes on and head to either Hong Kong or Tokyo to watch the world’s greatest long-distance runners, and thousands of dedicated amateurs, tackling the city’s marathons on 16 February and 23 February respectively. Swinging balls is the name of the game at the Hong Kong Masters on 21 and 23 February, while, blink and you’ll miss the passing of one at the epic Super Bowl, which this year takes place in New York on 2 February.
Alternatively, catch Turner-prize-winning artist Darren Almond’s show at White Cube Bermondsey in London, where he will be exhibiting a series of beautiful and haunting photographs, taken by the light of the full moon from locations on every continent. On Fridays throughout February, the stunning Museu Europeu d’Art Modern (MEAM) in Barcelona presents Blues, a series of blues concerts held in the picturesque galleries in the Palau Gomis. An award-winning cross-pollination, in my view!
Barcelona also hosts the Mobile World Congress from 24 to 27 February, so that’s the place to be if you want to know what’s happening next. And from 15 February, the Philippine skyline will be ablaze with extraordinary firework displays from competing teams around the world at the 5th annual Philippine International Pyromusical Competition.
Here to tell us more about the hottest happenings in Hong Kong and Miami this month, I’m delighted to introduce our two Monthly Insiders, Constance Haisma-Kwok and Riki Altman.
