FANTASTIC FACTS
Oscar-winning Tim Yip, who won the movie industry’s most prestigious award for his art direction of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, was commissioned to produce the hotel’s signature fan.
The symbolic well in the hotel lobby and dramatic swirling carpet design featured throughout the hotel, were inspired by the colours found in the glazed Chinese ceramics known as Longquan Celadon, and the spring water wells that gave their name to the Wangfujing district, which translates as “princely residences well”.
The striking overhead fish lamp in the lobby – designed by world-renowned Frank Gehry – is the only one of its kind in the world. Specially commissioned, this features red, pink and peach fish which appear to swim, as if chasing each other. The circular artwork is made up of hundreds of fragments of formica while subtle LED lighting enhances the effect of the fish in motion.
The MO Bar art deco-inspired uniforms were personally designed by fashion designer Vivienne Tam, who is herself one of the Group’s celebrity ‘fans’.
Each of the restaurants and bar has a distinctive logo, created by renowned Hong Kong-based designer Alan Chan, designed to reflect its particular usage and character, including the Mandarin Grill + Bar, which incorporates elements of the iconic Forbidden City.
The quartz sand bed in the hotel’s Spa is a first for China. This is used during the signature ‘Gems Healing Power’ treatment. A combination of mystic energy and pressure from the warm, pivoting bed helps with the process of total physical and mental relaxation.
