The Roasters
When coffee obsessives Evelyn Priesch and Werner Savernik opened
Coffee Pirates back in 2012, near the university in the 9th district, they took the classic model of 19th-century cafés such as the
Landtmann and switched it up, hanging Thonet chairs alongside pop art prints on the walls in homage. But while Vienna’s traditional cafés are all about the atmosphere and sedate service, the focus here is on the single-origin beans, sourced from around the world (try the Costa Rican Starmaya with hibiscus notes) and roasted in house. As the first certified organic coffee shop in Vienna, the newly refurbished Coffee Pirates led the way for others, hosting AeroPress competitions and barista workshops, and adding spiced cold brews to the mix, alongside dinky micro-roaster
Kaffeefabrik near Karlplatz in the 4th district and – both in the boho 7th – the minimalist white
Kaffemik and
Jonas Reindl, known for its V60 filter brews using Ethiopian beans that owner Philip Feyer roasts on site twice a week. Joining these OG roasters recently was
Beandependent, a one-man show near the Volkertmarkt conducted by Laurent Pfeifer, who hand-roasts in small batches to maintain quality, surrounded by show-room La Marzocco espresso machines. “Every drink I make is a signature one,” he says. “The result is a blend of me as a roaster interpreting a bean and me as a barista interpreting the drink. I think we’ll be seeing more micro roasteries in the future – maybe this is the fourth wave!” Pop by for the two-person experience menu in summer, tasting one single-origin bean across four different styles.
