Naturally Better

One of our guiding principles at Mandarin Oriental is ‘Acting with responsibility’, which we strive to achieve through our Naturally Better plan. We’re on a journey to make things Naturally Better for the planet, for communities, and for you. As well as embracing and putting into practice our global sustainability initiatives, such as eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021, here at Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona we also have our own local initiatives to make sure we play our part in making your stay more sustainable.

For the planet


We have implemented several measures across our hotel which align with our group-wide policy of eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021. Beyond the removal of plastic bottles, we are working to have an on-site water filtration system to produce our own water. We have eliminated all single use amenities (cotton-swabs, combs, razors, treatment consumables) in our spa and are working to replace all single-use in-room guest toiletries and amenities.

We are working towards implementing The Barcelona Biosphere Commitment to Tourism Sustainability (CSTBB) which recognizes responsible and environmentally friendly management, culture, working conditions, gender equity and social and economic returns.

We have implemented LED technology throughout the hotel, with a current compliance rate of 92%. This, along with other energy saving measures represents a saving in consumption of 286,000 kW since 2017, the equivalent of the energy consumption required for 55 apartments.

We make compost through a specialized local company that carries out daily waste collection, thus reducing the weight of our waste to landfill by 16%.

We have partnered with Clean the World for bars of soap donations. We also work with local organizations and collaborate with Food, Linen and Clothes donations.

All office paper used on property is certified as sustainable forest FSC. Local suppliers represent up to 80% of our total supply chain.

For communities


We work with CUINA JUSTA a social economy company that assists people who struggle with mental health issues. Several of our colleagues are from CJ, and we have also organised our work environment and facilities in such a way that people who have physical disabilities are able to work alongside us with ease.

During COVID-19, our team of volunteers contributed almost 1000 hours of collective work in various areas including: blood donation, food collection, assistance to the homeless, drawings and letters for patients in hospitals and nursing homes.

Once a year, we participate in beach cleaning organized by the Barcelona Forum District. In 2019 we were the winning team, collecting a total of 120 kgs of waste.

We participate in various charity sporting events (Triathlon Garmin, Interhotel Games). Every year we form part of the team of volunteers of “Banc dels Aliments” to collect food at Christmas. We also organize a Wishing Tree in our lobby with which we can collect Christmas gifts for children living in foster homes.
