Naturally Better

One of our guiding principles at Mandarin Oriental is ‘Acting with responsibility’, which we strive to achieve through our Naturally Better plan. We’re on a journey to make things Naturally Better for the planet, for communities, and for you. As well as embracing and putting into practice our global sustainability initiatives, such as eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021, here at Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park, London we also have our own local initiatives to make sure we play our part in making your stay more sustainable.

We have implemented several measures across our hotel which align with our group-wide policy of eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021. Beyond the removal of plastic bottles, we have eliminated all single use amenities (cotton-swabs, combs, razors, treatment consumables) in our Spa.​ We are also working on replacing all single-use in-room amenities with innovative bamboo based guest toiletries.​ We’ve also introduced sustainability preferences to Fans of M.O. members so you can opt into bringing your own toiletries to reduce both waste and plastic usage.

Almost two thirds of landfill waste is biodegradable. This waste rots and decomposes and produces harmful gases (CO2 and Methane) which are both greenhouse gases and contribute to global warming. Landfills also pollute the local environment, including the water and the soil. Here at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London we have partnered with Re-Food Ltd. to move our waste from landfills and convert it into green energy. This waste disposal system not only creates a nutrient-rich biofertilizer, but also reduces our carbon footprint with the generation of electric power from 100% renewable sources.

As part of our commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle we’ve partnered with Clean the World to give discarded soap bars a second life. Clean the World redistributes soaps and other hotel amenities to some of the most vulnerable communities in the world.

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London is a proud participant of the Responsible Procurement Policy to ensure that purchasing decisions factor in the social and environmental impact. This policy also includes a Supplier Code of Conduct which sets out principles and minimum standards that we expect our suppliers to comply with, including holding their own suppliers and subcontractors accountable.

For communities

Following a fire at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London in 2018, our colleagues spent more than 40,000 hours volunteering at local charities to give back to the community. Dubbed ‘Fantastic London’, two of the biggest contributions were made to Oxfam, where colleagues volunteered 21,000 hours in Oxfam shops across London, and the Felix Project, who were supported with 6,000 hours of food service and redistribution. In recognition of our commitment, we were honoured with the Best CSR Strategy award by the 2019 HR Excellence Awards for the Fantastic London campaign.

Fantastic London continues today and has become a welcome mainstay in the community.
