Naturally Better

One of our guiding principles at Mandarin Oriental is ‘Acting with responsibility’, which we strive to achieve through our Naturally Better plan. We’re on a journey to make things Naturally Better for the planet, for communities, and for you. As well as embracing and putting into practice our global sustainability initiatives, such as eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021, here at Mandarin Oriental, Santiago we also have our own local initiatives to make sure we play our part in making your stay more sustainable.

For the planet

We have implemented several measures across our hotel which align with our group-wide policy of eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021. All water and soda bottles in the hotel have been replaced with glass bottles. Plastic straws and take-away cutlery have been replaced with bamboo. We are now working towards eliminating all single-use in-room amenities and replacing them with innovative bamboo-based containers. From 2021 we have requested that our suppliers do not deliver products in plastic wrap.

Mandarin Oriental, Santiago received the Silver Energy Efficiency Performance Certificate Award from the Chilean Energy Agency of Sustainability for the period 2019-2021.

The hotel has implemented an optimized control system within its hot water boilers, which has resulted in a saving 164.07 m3 of natural gas in a year of regular consumption (compared to just 31.2m3 with the previous system). All hotel lightning has also been updated to LED lights.

Guests can opt for reduced bed linen and towel changes to help save water and energy, and all of our water closets feature a dual flush system to help save water.

We look at how to manage waste through a variety of systems. Beyond working with certified companies to best manage the recycling of paper, glass, and plastic, our internal food packaging bags have been replaced by new "smart pack" bags, which are 100% recyclable. We are also in the process of installing a new in-house composting system to turn vegetable waste into organic material that we will be used in our gardens and a future orchard.

Mandarin Oriental, Santiago is part of the "National Car Chargers Network of Chile" (ENEL X), and the only hotel in Santiago to have electric car chargers.

For communities

Mandarin Oriental, Santiago works closely with well-known Chilean foundation San José para la Adopción. This vital group assists with the adoption process from start to finish, including supporting the health of unborn infants and mothers, helping families navigate adoption procedures, and providing a safe and loving environment for older children. The hotel also works closely with Descúbreme, a non-profit organization that supports people with cognitive disabilities.
