Sustainability

Naturally Better

One of our guiding principles at Mandarin Oriental is ‘Acting with responsibility’, which we strive to achieve through our Naturally Better plan. We’re on a journey to make things Naturally Better for the planet, for communities, and for you. As well as embracing and putting into practice our global sustainability initiatives, such as eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021, here at Mandarin Oriental, Taipei we also have our own local initiatives to make sure we play our part in making your stay more sustainable.

For the planet

We have implemented several measures across our hotel which align with our group-wide policy of eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021. In addition to the removal of plastic bottles in the guest rooms, we are also working on eliminating single-use plastic packaging through initiatives, such as replacing single-use food containers with sustainably sourced and recyclable paper.

Here at Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, we have a measurement system in place to manage and reduce food waste. In 2019, our food waste rate was effectively reduced by 8% compared to the previous year which exceeded the local government guidelines of 5%. In addition, we’ve also introduced sustainability preferences so our guests can opt into our linen and towel reuse programme to reduce laundry volume.

In order to minimise our carbon footprint, our restaurants focus on sourcing local and seasonal ingredients from  farms located across Taiwan. We have partnered with a local honey farm that supplies all of the hotel’s honey. We remain committed to choosing suppliers who share our views and commitment towards the community and environment, and favour fair-trade certified agricultural products.

For communities

Our colleagues are committed to working with communities and charitable organisations to make a difference. These include Taiwan Foundation of Rare Disorders, Syin-Lu Social Welfare Foundation, and Leopard Cat Association of Taiwan (LCAT). We also support various indigenous elementary schools located in remote mountain areas where educational resources are scarce, and take part in visits to senior citizen homes, homeless centres, Harmony Home Foundation Taiwan, Mary’s Doggies, animal shelters and neighbour park clean-ups.
