Where to shop in Atlanta

From inimitable indie boutiques to department stores, these retail spots are the best in the city. And when your energy flags, sip on that Atlanta icon: Coca-Cola

Atlanta-based journalist Gray Chapman writes about her city for titles including Nylon, Vice and Atlanta Magazine.

Most people associate shopping in Atlanta with the neighbourhood of Buckhead – and for good reason, as it’s where you’ll find the city’s best luxury stores: Phipps and Lenox Malls are both home to sprawling department stores (Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, respectively). Just down Peachtree Road – home to Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta – you’ll find The Shops Buckhead, with its big names, and sleek storefronts including NARS, which has an exclusive partnership with the hotel as part of the new Ladies of Luxury package. But if you’re after something more eclectic, here are the places to visit.

For indie makers and local art

If there’s one place in Atlanta to which artsy types flock for gifts, handmade jewellery, and local prints, it’s Young Blood. This whitewashed jewel box of a boutique, features a gorgeous selection of handmade goods, and has become a go-to shopping destination for cool Atlantans over the years. Stop in for one-of-a-kind ceramics, dainty gold stacking rings, bold textiles by Block Shop, and local art; stay for the striking, fragrant bouquets designed by florist Ayla Gurganis at the shop’s in-store flower stand.
Don’t miss: while you’re on that stretch of North Highland, pop into Highland Row Antiques next door for a 10,000-square foot labyrinth of retro treasures. A few doors down, you’ll also find Collect, a cool-girl outpost selling chic luxury vintage and glam accessories, from jewellery to candy-hued sunglasses.

For bohemian treasure-hunters

What was once a wacky, cluttered maze of a bohemian antique store, Paris on Ponce is now one of the city’s best destinations for homewares and gifts – and still just as bohemian, thanks to its Moulin Rouge vibes (and actual Moulin Rouge-themed party space). You’ll find everything from baroque velvet tufted sofas to quirky taxidermy to vintage eveningwear tucked in the 30+ stalls. There’s also a fully equipped coffee bar to fuel your browsing.
Don’t miss: meeting and greeting Baudelaire, the store’s resident pug – you can usually find him snoozing next to the cash register.

For high-end design

The Westside has been Atlanta’s design epicentre for years, and at the Westside Provisions District, you’ll find a small but mighty array of shops selling everything from handmade luxury candles to clothing. Indulge in a little self-care with the small-batch, Atlanta-made natural beauty goods at Little Barn Apothecary, beloved by editors at Vogue, Elle, and Goop. At Brick+Mortar, you’ll find not only gorgeous, hand-poured candles in scents like ‘Campfire’, ‘Forest’, and ‘Mountain’, but also the shop-within-a-shop of Megan Huntz, whose expertly made silk dresses are staples in many a modern Atlanta woman’s wardrobe.
Don’t miss: the flagships of Sid and Ann Mashburn, Atlanta’s fashion design power couple: gents can have their suits, shirts, or denim tailored while sipping a cold beer at Sid’s shop, while over at Ann’s, ladies will find chic feminine apparel, including the sharpest shirt-dresses in the city.

For a one-stop shop

The massive restoration project that is Ponce City Market – a circa-1926 brick building perched on Atlanta’s colourful Ponce de Leon – is now home to some of the city’s most eclectic shopping and dining. Stop by Citizen Supply on the second floor for handsome handcrafted goods and Atlanta-themed gifts (think flags, keyrings and T-shirts). Down the hall, Modern Mystic stocks an array of glittering crystals, tarot cards and artisan apothecary goods in a highly Instagrammable shop. And on the building’s ground floor, don’t miss Coco and Mischa’s curated mix of vintage and modern clothing and accessories, from chic vintage moto jackets to minimalist ceramic jewellery.
Don’t miss: the hip amusement park on the roof of the historic building.
