Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai's signature fan was created by Dubai-based multidisciplinary designer Aljoud Lootah.
Known for her work creating bespoke objects and collectables, Aljoud is one of the most talented, emerging artists in the UAE.
Featuring an artistic blend of local Emirati heritage and modern touches, the signature fan takes inspiration from both land and sea, historically the two main sources of livelihood for residents of the UAE. The fan's main geometric pattern is inspired by Khous, a palm frond weaving technique traditionally used by Emiratis to create a variety of items including The Mahaffa, a hand-held square fan, which provided another source of inspiration for Aljoud.
The fan's curved pattern references the sea, which has played an integral part in Dubai's evolution from fishing village to successful port and international city. Made from brushed brass, the ribbed structure complements the interiors of the resort and represents the modern edges of city.
The overall result is a stunning work of art that truly reflects the spirit of Dubai.
