What to do with one more night in five fantastic cities

If you found that you had one more night in a city where you’ve just spent an introductory day or two, where would you go? From a day of pure escapism in Santiago, to a Bond-esque adventure in Italy, and a culinary journey in Macau, here are some suggestions for getting the very best out of an extra 24 hours in town

Bellagio at Lake Como, Italy

A boat trip to Bellagio

While staying at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como on the shores of Lake Como, you’ll want to hit the water. If you’ve already experienced the distinctive ‘floating’ outdoor pool, go one step further and take a boat to the stunning Villa del Balbianello, which stands on a hill surrounded by its panoramic terraced garden. The 18th-century villa is home to a rich collection of art from around the world and was used as a setting for the Bond film Casino Royale. Chart a course for dinner at Mistral, a Michelin-starred restaurant with views over the lake at Bellagio, which is famed for its inventive molecular dining experience in a traditional Italian setting. If you feel like staying closer to home, snag a table on the lakeside terrace at L˜ARIA, where Executive Chef Vincenzo Guarino serves up classic Mediterranean fare with a creative twist with an emphasis is on fresh local produce.

Try Macau’s best dining

With its unique cuisine, Macau is thought to be the foodie birthplace of Asian Fusion. The city’s dining comes alive each November with the 17-day Macau Food Festival. While staying at Mandarin Oriental, Macau, you’ll be well placed to experience the carnival-style food festival held near Macau Tower, before sampling locally inspired cocktails at Vida Rica Bar.

Pool at Hotel Santiago, Chile

Spoil yourself in Santiago

There’s something special about Santiago: the sizzling heat, the vibrant scents and sounds of a lively South American capital – not to mention the addictive pisco sours. But sometimes you need a break from the joyously riotous assault to the senses. So how do you find an oasis in the city? Follow the mantra of the best things in life being free and head for Cerro Santa Lucía, an undulating, landscaped park in the heart of the city. Step on the curved stone staircase at the entrance and take a hike to the top of the park – where you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of the snow-topped Andes – you’ll feel a million miles from the city below. Maintain the mindful vibes with a dip in the enticing lagoon-style pool at Mandarin Oriental, Santiago – complete with rejuvenating waterfall.
