Kuala Lumpur

The best views in Kuala Lumpur

In a city of highrises, it can be difficult to see the metaphorical wood through the vertiginous glass and steel trees. But venture skyward and the city takes on a whole new perspective. Here we explore the best vantage points in Kuala Lumpur, by day and night

Fuego at Troika Sky Dining

Fuego at Troika Sky Dining

Since its inception five years ago, Fuego has been the go-to space for Kuala Lumpur’s most unobstructed views. The breezy alfresco dining area combined with its vibrant Latin American style means that it’s casual enough that you can spend a whole night here simply snacking on the many varieties of guacamole – the restaurant serves up multiple iterations of the green stuff including one with cili padi (bird’s-eye chilli) and smoked eel – with a negroni in hand. Reservations are a must, even on weeknights.

Heli Lounge Bar

Heli Lounge Bar

This is not just any bar, it’s a helipad-turned-bar with a 360-degree view of the city. Score a table outdoors for a pre-dinner drink and soak in the views before you head to one of the many excellent restaurants in the vicinity. If you’re in a group, book one of the lounge’s aeronautically-themed pods for a little extra privacy. Top tip: aim to arrive just before sunset on a clear day when the views are unrivalled – and no filters are needed.

KLCC sky bridge

KLCC sky bridge

Many vantage points aspire to offer views of Kuala Lumpur’s poster icon, the Petronas Twin Towers, but the tallest twin structures in the world are not just for admiring, they’re also a great point from which to admire the rest of the city. Scale up to level 41 to the sky bridge walkway that connects the two. Because the bridge is indoors and sealed by glass, it’s a great option for kids or those wary of heights. If you’re not too woozy, you can ride up a second elevator to the observation deck on level 86. Head up in the morning to miss some of the crowds and see the day dawn over the city. Once you’ve filled your photo quota, descend down to the adjoining mall, Suria KLCC, for a spot of high-end shopping and local fare.

Dinner in the sky

Dinner in the sky

Dinner in the Sky is a novel dining experience where guests are elevated on a platform up to 50m above ground. Lift-off takes place nearby at the Petronas Twin Towers, meaning you’ll get a glittering view of the city as you tuck into your duck breast. All reservations include a three-course dinner, but really, it’s the off-the-ground experience you’ll come to remember more than anything else. During the holiday season, a special Christmas edition can be booked with appearances from Santa and ‘reindeers’ attached to the platform to give the impression of a sleigh ride in the sky.

Tamarind Springs by Samadhi

Tamarind Springs by Samadhi

Despite being located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Tamarind Springs by Samadhi is unusual as it’s one of the few city restaurants surrounded by lush greenery. Slip into the restaurant when cars are backed up in peak hour traffic just below, and you’ll have temporarily escaped into a sanctuary nestled in Ampang’s forest reserve. The space is romantically lit by candles and adorned by stone-carved statues – akin to a luxury Thai resort. If celebrating an anniversary or birthday, make sure you book ahead for a dreamy and romantic escape away from the bustle of the city.

Mandarin Oriental’s swimming pool

Mandarin Oriental’s swimming pool

There’s no better location to relax and see the sights simultaneously than at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur’s infinity pool. Take in the impressive skyline as you paddle, or if you prefer not to get wet, relax at one of the shaded poolside cabanas with a frozen margarita. For a post-pool massage, take solace at The Spa, where the Digital Wellness Escape focuses on strains resulting from the frequent use of digital devices.
