A moment with… Christian Louboutin

Think red soled shoes and only one name springs to mind. Christian Louboutin has been making waves since the 1990s as one of the world’s most eminent shoe designers, steadily growing his empire with stores as far ranging as Las Vegas and Tokyo. Prized by the likes of Princess Diana and Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, Louboutin’s recent projects include a capsule collection of baby booties (in collaboration with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop) and his boundary-breaking Nudes Collection, featuring hues for all skin tones. As for the red soles, it all started with a pot of nail varnish pinched from one of his assistants…

If I weren’t a designer, I would be…

A scriptwriter for cinema or a landscape architect. Few people know that I’m also a trapeze artist and am very green-fingered.

When travelling, I’m stressed if I don’t have…

My phone, my ring and my beard trimmer. Travel to me is never-ending, but I don’t complain.

If Paris were a shoe it would be…

A pump: Paris is a fairly pedestrian city and due to the unpredictable weather, a closed shoe is a more sensible option. I’m most proud of my pumps – to me they’re like a beautiful face with no make-up.

I wish I could take credit for…

The recipe for tiramisu.

My favourite Mandarin Oriental detail is…

The 25-m long pool at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.

The phrase I’m best known for saying is…

Just one more and then “we go to bed”.

The most touching story I’ve heard about my shoes…

Has to be a WhatsApp message from a friend sharing the passing of Aretha Franklin that said, “Some people would die for them, but she decided to die with them.”

The best thing about Mandarin Oriental is...

The gluten-free toast at breakfast. As a Frenchman, my bread is very important to me!

My lasting memory of Mandarin Oriental is…

A long chat with Chadwick Boseman at Mandarin Oriental, New York – such an interesting character and fun companion to share a martini with.
