Tradition in Taipei

Couples are spoilt for choice when it comes to weddings at Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, the city's most tastefully extravagant hotel, which boasts two spectacular ballrooms and the more intimate Grand Salon for ceremonies. Six luxurious packages are available, all of which come with a wealth of extras, such as Jo Malone and La Prairie gifts and a guest signature book – or go bespoke and work with the hotel's wedding planners to create your own special day. Many newlyweds incorporate ancient Taiwanese customs into their big day, such as the bride wearing a red gown (a colour associated with good fortune), and choosing a mouthwatering Chinese banquet for the wedding breakfast (steamed lobster with black garlic is always a crowd-pleaser). Best of all, the bride and groom receive a complimentary one-night honeymoon.

Ceremonies take place alfresco in the enclosed garden, beneath cloisters in the Monastery Lounge, on the terrace of the presidential suite, or even in the spa – housed in what was once the Renaissance chapel, so this isn't as odd as it sounds. If you don't want to go bespoke, there's a glamorous wedding package available, including rental of the ceremony and reception rooms, sparkling wine, a three-course dinner plus bubbly and strawberries in-room and a 60-minute spa treatment for the newlyweds. Couples getting married at the hotel receive a complimentary honeymoon night in a luxury suite, too.
