One city, five ways: Kuala Lumpur

A dynamic, ever-growing metropolis, Malaysia's captial is defined as much by its gleaming skyscrapers, shopping malls, and world-class restaurants as it is by lush parks and forest reserves, colourful temples and lively street food markets

Interior of Lai Po Heen restaurant

For gourmands

You can find delicious, high quality food in every corner of Kuala Lumpur, from ubiquitous street vendors and mamak stalls to hip cafés and upscale restaurants. The basement of a shopping mall might feel like an unlikely place to take it all in, but few places are as all-encompassing as the Hutong Food Court. Here you’ll find some of Malaysia’s best hawkers serving their trademark dishes. In Petaling Jaya, the Restoran Green View has been serving quality seafood to local families for decades. Come here for the signature sang har mee (freshwater-prawn noodles) in a lively and convivial atmosphere. There’s a varied choice of restaurants within Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur including the elegant Cantonese lunch spot, Lai Po Heen.

Exhibition at Wei Ling Gallery, Kuala Lumpur

For art lovers

The city’s art scene has upped its game in recent years. The Ilham Gallery, opened in 2015 and quickly became one of the country’s cutting-edge galleries, with a focus on modern Malaysian art. The Wei-Ling Gallery, housed in a pre-war building in Brickfields, is another key spot for homegrown contemporary work. Malaysia’s vast National Art Gallery, on Jalan Tun Razak, just next door to the Istana Budaya – Kuala Lumpur’s premier performing arts venue – has a permanent collection that contains everything from traditional batik to pop art.

For night owls

When the sun falls and the temperature cools, Kuala Lumpur really comes alive. Pasar malams (night markets) occur all over the city, and and are where you can sample some of the best street food KL has to offer. The Pasar Malam Taman Connaught, which runs every Wednesday from 5pm ‘til late, offers over a mile’s worth of buzzing stalls selling sweet treats such as coconut jelly, and Malaysian staples like banana leaf-wrapped nasi lemak and curious snacks including Coca Cola-fried chicken.

Want to hit a dancefloor? Since opening in 2016, the cavernous kyō, has gained momentum as a credible club for weekenders in search of house, techno and craft cocktails. For something more intimate, head to PS-150, a hidden speakeasy with the innocent veneer of a retro toy shop, or the ever-chic MO Bar at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, with one of the city’s largest whisky selections.

A peacock displays its feathers

For family travellers

KL abounds with kid-friendly green spaces. Just ten minutes from the city centre, the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is a remarkable 20.9-acre public aviary that’s home to more than 3,000 birds. Over in Mutiara Damansara, you’ll find an outpost of Kidzania, the international play park franchise, that allows kids to run the show in a fully functioning replica city. Grown-ups can enjoy some all-important quality coffee at Blokke, a Lego-inspired cafe in the CITTA mall, with adjoining indoor playground, climbing wall and trampoline for children to let off steam.
