Sustainability

Mandarin Oriental is committed to contributing to the communities in which we operate and responsibly managing our environmental impacts and social commitments.

Naturally Better

One of our guiding principles at Mandarin Oriental is ‘Acting with responsibility’, which we strive to achieve through our Naturally Better plan. We’re on a journey to make things ‘Naturally Better’ for the planet, for communities, and for you. As well as embracing and putting into practice our global sustainability initiatives, here at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai we also have our own local initiatives to make sure we play our part in making your stay more sustainable.

For the Planet

Marine Conservation

In 2022 we partnered with Freestyle Divers and Azraq For The Oceans to create a major Fan-shaped artificial reef. This 12-foot structure was sunk off the coast of Fujairah in Dibba Bay in April 2022, and will create a whole new underwater ecosystem attracting a diverse array of marine life. Over the course of the first 12 months, the growth of new coral will be monitored, as we aim to help increase the size of the marine ecosystems on the UAE coastline.

Plastic

We have implemented several measures which align with our group-wide policy and have eliminated single-use plastic across our resort. In addition, amenities in guest suites are cruelty-free and made from responsibly sourced and sustainable materials. Further resort-wide initiatives include the installation of a water filtration system for all areas of the hotel, including poolside refills with re-usable glassware and bottles.

Energy and water

Energy-efficient techniques are implemented throughout our resort with the use of LED lights in public areas as well as motion sensors in the back of house areas. Guestrooms have an energy saving mode allowing lights to turn off when the room is vacant. We also rely on the use of our solar panels to provide hot water throughout the hotel. In addition, guests may explore Dubai in one of our premium Tesla X electric vehicles, encouraging carbon footprint reduction.

In addition to providing our guests with the option to reuse linen and towels, all our guest bathrooms are fitted with water-efficient fixtures such as water savers installed within all shower heads. Also, to maintain the greenery of our resort all year round, our gardeners use an irrigation tank to ensure that any water not absorbed by our plants is reused.

Biodiversity and waste

A hydroponic farm, a renowned method of growing plants without soil, has been implemented to supply fresh, organic produce all year round for The Bay, our beachside brasserie. By sowing the vegetable garden, the resort reinforces its commitment to environmental responsibility.

We also installed a liquid food biodigester that allows us to sustainably break down and compost organic food waste. The food waste from our restaurants, is diverted from landfill and converted into greywater.

Responsible procurement

Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai is proudly abiding by the Group’s Responsible Procurement Policy, ensuring that social and environmental impacts are factored into all of our purchasing decisions. All paper usage within the hotel is approved by the Forest Stewardship Council so that we are using materials from well-managed forests or recycled sources. Providing fair trade and sustainable products is of utmost importance at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai.

For communities

Ramadan of Hope

In March 2022, to celebrate Ramadan, we collaborated with not-for-profit organisation, Ray of Hope, and famed Emirati artist Abdulla Lutfi to raise awareness about Autism, as the beginning of the Holy Month coincided with World Autism Day. As an artist on the autism spectrum, Abdulla sees and interprets the world in a unique and extraordinary way. To connect with the local community, engage directly with social causes and help create positive change, Ray of Hope and Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai came together to create a bespoke fan-shaped canvas inspired by Abdulla’s distinct black and white drawing technique capturing the beauty of Ramadan through the lenses of the Ray of Hope artists.

The Ramadan Fan was displayed in The Bay throughout the Holy Month, and guests enjoying Iftar and Suhoor could visit and see this beautiful piece that was both a visual testament to the power of cultural exchange and inclusivity, and an evocative tribute to the Mandarin Oriental legacy.

Discard linens

All Resort discarded linens are collected and donated to a local animal shelter, to support the rescue of stray cats and dogs.
